HOUSTON -- An elderly woman and two Klein Forest High School students were killed after their cars collided Friday afternoon.
It happened on FM 1960 near Kuykendahl in North Harris County just after 1 p.m.
Witnesses tell police a Nissan sports car was drag racing another car when it lost control, swerved into oncoming traffic, and was hit by a Honda Civic.
The driver of the Honda, 74-year-old Anna Karpenia, was killed instantly. Klein Forest students Zachary Larwa, a senior, and Phi Le, a junior, were also killed. Both students were 18-years old.
"They're a part of my community, they're a part of Klein Forest. It's sad for me that they're gone," said Germalean Collins, a junior at Klein Forest.
Witnesses say the Nissan was going in excess of 90-miles-per-hour. The engine was ripped from the car and thrown more than 50 yards on impact.
"The destruction was incredible," said Les Tollett, who was one of the first people on the scene. "They had to be going at an incredible velocity to cause that kind of damage."
Police are questioning the driver of an Infiniti sports car they believe was also involved in the race. The driver, described as a college freshman, denies he was racing but admits to seeing the accident.
"I hear there's a lot of drag racing going on down this road quite often," said nearby resident Ronna Conring." It's just devastating."
Many students at Friday night's Klein Forest football game versus Klein High School had not yet heard the grim news about their classmates, but word was spreading fast. Sophomore Peter Vongphakdy thinks there's a lesson to be learned.
"I think the message is follow the rules, don't ever break them," he said.
The accident remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff's Department
this gets to me cause i remember last night i was at the soufside we got a phone call for my homiboi saying his cousin died. he didnt believe it he was in tears. i didnt blame him i been through what he been through.
"i told his ass not to skip school that white boy pressure him to go i know it he always do i wanna curse his family out" i begin to tear cause got to me. i didnt know these people but i know what my homiboi going through.
